Ukraine has approved conditions to reduce by 2030 greenhouse gas emissions by 65% from the 1990 level.
This goal was approved by a resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine last July.
“The Cabinet of Ministers has approved Ukraine’s Renewed Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement. By decarbonization and the development of renewable energy sources, we intend to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 35% of the 1990 level. Ukraine goes side by side with the EU and the United States in the fight against climate change,” wrote the Ukrainian Prime minister Denis Shmyhal on his Twitter page.
“Our goal is to reach 35% of the 1990 level in 2030, more ambitious than the EU goal (they have a 55% target),” said Taras Kachka, Trade Representative of Ukraine, Deputy Minister of Economy.
Ukraine’s initial contribution to the Paris Climate Agreement, adopted by the Cabinet of Ministers in September 2015, aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030, i.e. up to 60% of the 1990 level.
The indicator of emission reduction by 65% by 2030 was obtained based on the calculation that in 1990, Ukraine’s emissions, taking into account land use and forestry, amounted to 884 million tons. At the same time, in 2019, according to the inventory, CO2 emissions amounted to 332 million tons – 37.6% of the 1990 level.
Ukraine has been reforming its energy sector since 2009 when the lawmakers adopted a new legislation on renewable energy. The country joined the European Energy Community in February 2011 and set in October 2014 the goal to increase renewable energy share in the national power mix to 11% by 2020 while the Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2035, adopted in 2017, set the target of 25% of renewable energy share by 2035.
